Border collie helps family heal, then pay it forward

Submitted by Christine C.

About a year ago, my daughter lost her father. She has had a hard time dealing with the pain of the loss. I was searching for ways to help her feel better.

She has always loved border collies, learning all she could about them without ever meeting one. While visiting her grandma in Alabama, we went to a local rescue organization, but didn’t find just the right dog.  A week after we returned home, a picture arrived of a beautiful liver and white border collie/Aussie mix named Mick.

After asking tons of questions to see if he would fit in our family, we arranged to adopt him.  With the help of an organization that handles free transportation for animals to get to their new homes, we met Mick in February and he has been the best thing to happen to my daughter and our family!
She has since taught him to do several tricks and he is undergoing training to be a certified therapy dog.  My daughter wants to bring him to the hospital to sit with kids undergoing long-term care. Mick was a complete surprise to my daughter and she bonded with him over time. Initially, she was afraid to let him in to her heart, but Mick wouldn’t stop trying.

Mick has given me my little girl back!
